The installation of gas boilers will not be permitted in new buildings in Scotland from April 2024, and this could mean a significant reduction in gas boiler installations. Part of the proposed Heat in Buildings Bill is to prohibit the use of polluting heating systems by 2045, requiring the transition to clean heating systems like heat pumps across all Scottish homes and buildings.

There is an increased interest in hydrogen being used as a fuel in the gas network. This is in the early days of development, and it may be that around 2030 some areas on the gas network will have a small percentage of hydrogen blended with natural gas. However, even though boiler manufacturers are now providing ‘hydrogen-ready’ boilers, many experts agree this may be a long way off.
